Turtles (Testudines) form a monophyletic group with a highly distinctive body plan. The taxonomy and phylogeny of turtles are still under discussion, at least for some clades. Whereas in most previous studies, only a few species or genera were considered, we here use an extensive compilation of DNA sequences from nuclear and mitochondrial genes for more than two thirds of the total number of turtle species to infer a large phylogeny for this taxon. Our results enable us to discuss previous hypotheses on species phylogeny or taxonomy. We are thus able to discriminate between competing hypotheses and to suggest taxonomical modifications. Finally, we pinpoint the remaining ambiguities for this phylogeny and the species for which new sequences should be... |

INTRODUCTION Crinia darlingtoni Loveridge, 1933, was described from a series of four specimens collected by P. J. Darlington at the Queensland National Park, Macpherson Range, Queensland, and distinguished by the rudimentary condition of the first finger and the extremely small first toe. Loveridge noted that some specimens bore a resemblance to C. acutirostris Andersson in colouration but did not discuss the phylogenetic relationships of his new species. For a generic revision Parker (1940) examined a juvenile paratype and on the basis of a similarity in the condition of the prevomer, he associated C. darlingtoni with C. leai Fletcher, C. rosea Harrison and C. laevis (Günther). In the last species he also recognized two sub-species, C. l. laevis and C. l.... |

The genus Andinophryne, characterized by the presence of an omosternum, an externally visible tympanum, elongate parotoids and extensively webbed hands and feet is described from the Pacific versant of the Andes in northwestern Ecuador and southwestern Colombia. Two new species, Andinophryne colomai and A. olallai are described from Ecuador. The recently described Bufo atelopoides Lynch & Ruiz-Carranza is transferred to the new genus. Some comparisons with other atelopodid Bufonidae (Atelopus, Dendrophryniscus, Melanophryniscus, Oreophrynella, Osornophryne, Rhamphophryne) are made and some very tentative remarks on their relationships are ventilated. |

In a revision of West African Mabuya species in 1974, I described Mabuya polytropis occidentalis from Ghana and Liberia. Recently Dr. R. I. Crombie kindly drew my attention to the fact that by doing so, I had created a junior homonym of Euprepes occidentalis W. Peters, 1867, currently considered a valid species of Mabuya, occurring in Southwestern Africa (Fitzsimmons, 1943). This is true and obviously due to gross negligence on my part. Therefore the West African M. polytropis occidentalis Hoogmoed, 1974 is hereby renamed M. polytropis paucisquamis, in reference to the low numbers of scales in this subspecies as compared to the nominal subspecies. |

The lizard fauna of New Guinea numbers over 150 species (for a list, now well out-dated, see Loveridge, 1948), and probably more than two-thirds of these belong to the family Scincidae. With the exception of studies by Brown (1953, 1954) on the genus Emoia, the large and diverse scincid fauna has received little attention from herpetologists since De Rooij (1915) summarized existing knowledge. The validity of many named forms is questionable, and details of distribution and ecology are known for virtually none. The purpose of the present paper is to describe an evidently unnamed species that has been confused with a widespread Papuan species, Leiolopisma miotis. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to acknowledge with thanks the help of the following persons who... |

INTRODUCTION The scincid lizards of the genus Tribolonotus are generally dull-coloured, armoured, thigmothermic, cryptozoic lizards with several unique features in their morphology and biology. These features include the possession of abdominal glands and volar pores, a vestigial left oviduct, the production of a single egg or young (in all species so far investigated) and an ability to vocalize (in at least one species) otherwise unknown within the family Scincidae. As a result of two recent papers (Zweifel, 1966; Greer & Parker, 1968) the taxonomy of the genus is firmly based, while many aspects of the biology and ecology of various species have been documented. In the course of field work in New Guinea in 1969, as part of Program Β of the 1969... |

Three specimens of Atractus natans were found during fieldwork in the “Reserva Mamirauá”, Amazonas and a fourth one in the “Estação Científica Ferreira Penna”, Floresta de Caxiuanã, Pará, Brazil. The specimens from Mamirauá were all collected in floating logs in várzea forest during the period of flooding. The new species is small (maximum total length 308 mm) with a coniform head, has 17-17-17 smooth dorsals, without apical pits, male lacking pre-anal keels, ventrals 136-162, caudals 19-25, anal undivided. One or two postoculars, loreal 1.6 –2.8 times as long as high, frontal triangular, wider than long. Maxillary teeth 5-6. The hemipenis is bilobed, with bifurcated sulcus spematicus, capitulum with calyces covered by very small spines, body covered by... |

In his paper on a collection of Reptiles and Amphibians from Surinam VAN LIDTH DE JEUDE (1904, p. 84) mentions a specimen of Glauconia (= Leptotyphlops) macrolepis PTRS. Examination of this specimen showed that it differs in several characters from that species and I believe it to be a species new to science which I propose to name in honor of Professor Dr. J. E. W. IHLE of the Zoological Laboratory, University of Amsterdam, who always takes such a kind interest in my work and whom I always find willing to help me with advice. Leptotyphlops ihlei nov. spec. The origin of frogs, salamanders and caecilians is controversial. McGowan published an original hypothesis on lissamphibian origins in 2002 (McGowan, 2002, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 135: 1-32), stating that Gymnophiona was nested inside the 'microsaurian' lepospondyls, this clade was the sister-group of a caudate-salientian-albanerpetontid clade, and both were nested inside the dissorophoid temnospondyls. We have investigated McGowan's data matrix and isagree with the scoring of 35% of the cells. All taxa and all but two characters are affected. In some cases, we have a different interpretation about correspondence between morphology and character states, or we delimit states differently (or use information that was unknown in 2002). In... |

Of the genus Scincella Mittleman, 1950 (sensu Greer, 1974) 337 specimens from Asia were examined for 74 characters, which were treated in a numerical-taxonomic way. The dendrogram resulting from this analysis was not stringently adhered to. Because of the wide variation in certain numerical scale characters within one taxon or even within one population, these characters (used by many authors as key characters to separate taxa) are not regarded as very important. For sympatric and parapatric species other characters, including relative size of head, body and limbs, are regarded as very important, because these characters are influenced by the way of life (niche separation). For the separation of allopatric species scale-numbers, but many other characters... |

Microscopical investigations of the gut contents of six individuals of Dermochelys coriacea from southern England and the North Sea revealed the presence in all of these of numerous nematocysts, mainly scyphozoan. Only six species of Scyphozoa occur in British shallow waters and in the North Sea, viz., Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål), Chrysaora hysoscella (L.), Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.), C. lamarckii (L.) and Rhizostoma octopus (L.). For the purpose of comparison and identification an inventory was made of the cnidom of these six species (based on preserved material). Nematocysts of one or more of these species appeared to be present in each of the turtles, all six species being represented. One of the turtles in addition appeared to have... |

INTRODUCTION Mechanisms for regulating the specific weight of the body are well known in fishes. In other aquatic vertebrates the lungs might have a function similar to that of the swimbladder or the lungs in fishes. In anuran tadpoles the lungs may serve as hydrostatic balancers, but this has not been verified experimentally. Active regulation of lung volume, and thus of body volume and specific weight, during diving is unknown in adult anurans, although Parker (1936) expressed the opinion that in male Trichobatrachus robustus the lungs, which possess a posterior diverticulum surrounded by specialized musculature, serve as a hydrostatic apparatus. If there is no active regulation of lung volume during diving, the volume of the lungs will depend on such... |

Hybridization between divergent lineages often results in reduced hybrid viability. Here we report findings from a series of independent molecular analyses over several seasons on four life stages of F1 hybrids between the newts Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus. These two species form a bimodal hybrid zone of broad overlap in France, with F1 hybrids making up about 4% of the adult population. We demonstrate strong asymmetry in the direction of the cross, with one class (cristatus-mothered) making up about 90% of F1 hybrids. By analyzing embryos and hatchlings, we show that this asymmetry is not due to prezygotic effects, as both classes of hybrid embryos are present at similar frequencies, implicating differential selection on the two hybrid classes... |
